What is the truth about reincarnation? As there is so much to say, so many concepts, so many ideas, we thought that the best way to communicate this is to start with the most fundamental, and we will do that by recurring to one of the authors that have investigated this issue in more depth than anyone else. Let’s introduce Brian Weiss, a renowned psychiatrist and director of Mount Sinai Hospital in New York.

As Weiss himself states, he was a science man interested in solving the problems of mental patients and had never worried about issues like reincarnation or the paranormal. At one given point, and in order to better help his patients, this psychiatrist decided to use hypnosis therapy, something very far from what we see on television, a kind of technique actually used by professionals on many patients. The purpose of hypnosis is that the subject can completely relax and be able to remember things from their past that have traumatized them (we will not go into more detail on this article). During one of the hypnosis sessions, a patient began to remember things from another time, from another life. Dr. Brian Weiss was very surprised by this and continued to investigate the patient, who kept describing in detail his previous lives. Under hypnosis it is not possible to lie, so everything he said was apparently true.

Suddenly, a door to the unknown was opened: past lives and therefore reincarnation. He continued to investigate with more patients and exploring the best ways to get them to remember their past lives and find out the truth about reincarnation. When he had confirmed this, he bumped into yet another surprise. During a different regression, the patient’s voice changed and she began to speak in a different tone, with more wisdom and sweetness. It was, as Weiss would check later, the voice of a Master. In other words, a spiritual guide who took advantage of the hypnotic state of the patient in order to communicate with the psychiatrist through it. Before we continue, let’s explain a bit more what a Master is.

According to experts on the subject, each of us have a teacher or Master that is always around to help in life. It has received many names, for example for Christians usually call it “Guardian Angel”. This being is responsible for taking care of us during the time we are on Earth. It knows our life plan, it puts us to test and helps us to overcome these tests. We already knew our Master before coming to Earth, we have already talked with our Master about what we want to do here and how we plan to do it.

Our Masters And The Truth About Reincarnation

Going back to Brian Weiss, he began receiving a series of messages from these guides. The messages were always similar and pointing to a same truth across many different incarnations and lives. He went on to collect and publish some of the most interesting messages in one of his books: “Messages From The Masters“:

“Our task is to learn, to become God-like through knowledge. We know so little.. By knowledge we approach God, and then we can rest. Then we come back to teach and help others.”

“Often we find again and again the same people, just in different roles.”

“The reward is in doing, but doing without expecting anything…doing unselfishly.”

“Everything must be balanced. Nature is balanced. The beasts live in harmony. Humans have not learned to do that. They continue to destroy themselves.”

In these few sentences, the Master who speaks to Brian Weiss says many things. He says that the purpose of life is to learn, that we can not leave until we have learned what we needed. It also says that we return again and again to meet the same people, just in different roles: who in another life was your brother, perhaps is now your friend, your teacher or an enemy. And we find them again because we have pending tasks. We need to settle debts with them or the other way around… we have to pay the Karma, to make it balanced, so that everything we do, will come back to us in this or another life. Let’s continue with more revelations on the truth about reincarnation:

“The more ignorance there is, the less light there is. Evil is deep ignorance and almost total absence of light.”

“When reincarnation is no longer needed, when we have learned all our lessons and paid all our debts, we are given to choose from. We can return voluntarily to help, or stay on the other side and help from that state.”

When talking about this with other people, they will often ask, if reincarnation is true, how is it possible that there are now more people than a few centuries ago? Is there new energy? Are there new souls? Where do they come from? To answer these questions, we can also quote Brian Weiss:

“There are many more souls than people on Earth. This is not the only world. Souls exist in many dimensions. None of us has started on this planet. Earth is rather a kind of school. It is not the highest nor the lowest level of being.”

Addendum: The Truth About Reincarnation According to Vedic Master Srila Prabhupada

Srila Prabhupada - Truth about reincarnation
Srila Prabhupada – Truth about reincarnation

This is one of the many teachings based on Vedic knowledge, from a great spiritual master, Srila Prabhupada, as it was delivered to mankind to understand our “self” and find the truth about reincarnation and God.

Prabhupada: The soul is not created; it exists eternally with God. The soul has independence to move away from God, in which case it becomes a spark falling from a great fire. When the spark is separated from the fire, it loses its illumination. In any case, the individual soul always exists. The Master and his servants exist eternally. We can not say that the body parts are created separately. As soon as the body is present, all parts are with itself. The soul is never created and never dies. This affirms the Bhagavad-gita (2.20)

Student: What does it mean that any sin stains the soul?

The soul is not stained, but can participate in sinful activity. Although the oil can not be mixed with water, oil, when floating on water, is entrained. In the same way, as soon as we come into contact with material nature, we find ourselves in the grip of the material world. When the living entity enters the material world loses its own power. Then it is completely under the grip of material nature. The oil is never mixed with the water but it can be carried by the waves.

Are all spiritual souls the same?

The quality is the same. As you are a human being and me too, in the same way, you have two hands like me, you have two legs like me, etc., but still, we are different. This is individuality. But upon understanding that it is Krishna Consciousness, the form of Paramatma (Supersoul) can not be denied.

Many people say today that we must look within to find the truth instead of outside or the world of the senses.

To look inside means that you are a spiritual soul. But if you do not understand that you are not this body, but a spiritual soul, it is no good looking inside. Krishna says that “the wise man is not interested in the material body,” but the Hatta-yoga is mainly concentrated in the body. Perhaps through bodily exercise can one get the love of Krishna? If this were possible, all fighters and athletes would have managed to attain the love of Krishna.

For Augustine, the human mind and soul, which he called “reasonable soul” were one and the same.

No. These are different entities. The soul is located in several bodies which have different ways of thinking, feeling, different desires and mentalities. For example, the mind of a dog is not equal to that of a human being, but this does not mean that a dog has no soul. Then the mind differs depending on the body, but the soul always remains the same.

Augustine considered the soul as spiritual and different from the material body; also he believed that the soul existed before the birth of the body. He simply assumed that the soul was the superior part of the person and the body was the lower part. Similarly, he thought that the soul could gain immortality only after it was created by God, that is, after God led it to be. Augustine said that at the time of death, the soul continued to live forever.

But if the soul is created, how is it immortal? How is it eternal? How can the soul sometimes not be eternal?

But there are two phenomena; the body and the owner of the body are the same, there is no separation.

No. (emphatically)

When the body dies, the owner also dies.

No, no. But, why is there no knowledge department at the university in which to study these facts scientifically? That is my proposal, it is missing; It may be as you think or as I say, but there must be a department of knowledge to study this. Recently a cardiologist in Toronto accepted that there is a soul. I had corresponded with him and agree that there is a soul. Then it is another point of view, but our process is to accept knowledge of the authority. Krishna is accepted as authoritative by all the acaryas (Masters who teach by their own example). The Bhagavad-gita is accepted by philosophical circles and scholars from around the world. Krishna says: “As the embodied soul continually passes in this body from boyhood to youth to old age, the soul similarly passes into another body at death”. This statement gives Krishna, the highest authority in the tradition of knowledge. We accept that statement without argument. This is the way of Vedic understanding.

The idea of transmigration of the soul is very important, it is the beginning of transcendental philosophy, but no one in the West understands it. While we accept the changes of body in life and dreams, as these events occur during the life of being, we have no experience of transmigration at the time of death.

But in the dream you do not remember everything, because it is a hodgepodge of different things. Our nature is to forget; We have forgotten much of our childhood. We do not remember being in the womb of the mother, but there we were. The fact that we do not remember something, does not mean it did not happen. Because we are forgetful, we do not remember our past lives. The most important is the authority of Krishna; He is the perfect authority, and logically it presents the transmigration in the Bhagavad-gita.

If only must we believe what Krishna said, this is dogmatic.

No. The way of thinking is there, but the authority is final. If you want to know who your father is, you can investigate in many ways: by genealogy, attraction to both parents, or likeness in character to them, but finally the mother is the authority without fail.

But how do you know that we come from other bodily forms?

There may be evolution, but at the same time all the different species are existing. The fish, tiger, man, every species is in existence. It’s like the different styles of apartments. You can take one of them, according to your ability to pay rent, but all different styles of apartments are existing simultaneously. Also, the living entity, according to its karma (reaction of its past activities), is given the chance to occupy one of these bodily forms or style, although they are also evolving.

What will happen to you in the future?

We go back to Krishna. We have everything; Krishna’s name, address, the form of Krishna, Krishna activities, we know everything about him, and away we go. Krishna has assured us in the Bhagavad-gita 4.19: “One who knows the transcendental nature of My appearance and activities does not, upon leaving the body, take his birth again in this material world, but attains My eternal abode, O Arjuna!.” And not only the devotees accomplish this, but anyone who understands Krishna. As manifested by the Bhagavad-gita 4.9: “It is very nice and very scientific. And if we simply try to understand my position, try to understand God and what is my relation with God, janma karma me divyam, simply by understanding this, I become qualified to enter into the spiritual kingdom.”

In my past life may I have been aware of Krishna?

It does not matter. Now you can become aware. Take advantage of our Krishna Consciousness movement.
